BioWare claiming Mythic’s legacy (but only the good parts)

Mythic Entertainment produced one of the greatest MMOs in the history of MMOs: Dark Age of Camelot.

Mythic. Not EAMythic. Not BiowareMythic. Mythic. Bioware and EA are much more closely related with Warhammer: AoR. Afterall, at least one “expansion” was produced under the Bioware tag for that game.

However, when you check out the Bioware store, there is no Warhammer swag there. They do have some DAoC gear. Nice looking shirts of each realms symbol or the Celtic knot + dragon symbol, some pretty cool stuff for an old Mythic fan.

All of these great T-Shirts depicting the symbols of a great game produced by a once great studio have Bioware tagged on their back.

I call bullshit on this one. Really Bioware? Sweep Warhammer under the rug while claiming DAoC as your adopted son. Give me a break, you had nothing to do with this game for its production and evolution and have done little with this game after acquiring the Fairfax studio. Mythic’s name should be on the back of that shirt.

The BioWare “merger” with Mythic Entertainment forced by EA was effectively giving BioWare control of the Mythic studio, and all of it’s IP.

If you look at the pages of Dark Age of Camelot and Wrath of Heroes (Warhammer Online not updated yet) it carries the BioWare logo, with no reference to Mythic Entertainment. As an entity Mythic Entertainment does not exist, and as it stands there is no logo for BioWare Mythic as it is a studio within BioWare (the other studios don’t have seperate logos either).

Whilst I agree that Warhammer can be considered a stain on a companies games list due to the buggy release and a large subscriber drop, it is still a very pretty game, one that Games Workshop are happy with. The team that remains working on the game are dedicated and passionate about the game.

Regarding the Dark Age of Camelot t-shirts etc, part of this came with the website re-development and the 10th anniversary, there may also be more of a selling potential as there is more realm pride (3 factions) than the order vs destro of the Warhammer. Also don’t forget all uses of the Warhammer license has to be granted permission from Games Workshop, so getting t-shirts out with images is a much longer process than the IP they own rather than licensed to use.

Remember Wrath of Heroes is a new development by the BioWare Mythic studio so there is still life in the slimmed down studio.
